What is a BIN?

A Bank Identification Number (BIN) is composed of the first 6-8 digits of a card number. It is a key to identifying the card type, issuing bank name and payment processing system.

A BIN concept was established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to simplify and standardize the identification process for banks. BINs are part of the global financial system.

The primary industry of the card issuer is shown by the Major Industry Identifier (MII) or the first card digit. For example, digits 4 and 5 signify a bank or financial institution.

How does Authorization work?

When a cardholder makes an online purchase, they enter their card number, CVV and expiry date. The payment system immediately reads the BIN to identify the issuing bank and sends a payment request.

The issuing bank receives the request and checks the BIN card data to help prevent fraud. The bank then decides to confirm or decline the transaction. The entire verification process depends on the BIN, used by both payment networks and issuing banks.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a BIN or IIN? +
A Bank Identification Number (BIN) or Issuer Identification Number (IIN) is the first 6-8 digits of a card number. It identifies the card type, issuing bank and payment processing system. The BIN Checker uses these digits to display full card information instantly.
Is this BIN checker free to use? +
Yes! Axio BIN Checker Pro is completely free to use with no registration required. There are no usage limits — you can check as many BINs as you need.
How does the BIN lookup work? +
When you enter a BIN, our system searches our database of 343,000+ BIN records. If found, we instantly return the card information. If not found in our database, we attempt a real-time lookup via external APIs for maximum coverage.
Is it safe to use a BIN checker? +
Absolutely. BIN information (first 6-8 digits) is not sensitive data — it's the same information that payment processors use publicly to identify card types. We never ask for or store full card numbers, CVV codes or expiry dates.
What if my BIN is not found? +
Our database covers 343,000+ BINs. If a BIN is not found, it may be a very new or rare card. We continuously update our database to improve coverage.
